Thorin Suffering From Dragon Sickness by cfgriffith Thorin Suffering From Dragon Sickness by cfgriffith
I LOVED Richard's portrayal of the dragon sickness, and I wanted to capture that look while he wandered around Erebor looking for the Arkenstone (and believing one of his own Company must have stolen it and kept it from him). I wanted to make the viewer feel like one of the Company, wandering around discouraged, coming around a corner, and then looking up to see Thorin glaring at them as he lurks around the treasure like a mad ghost. Quickly now! Back to work! You probably don't want him getting too close and asking if you've found it yet...

I decided to take my time with this and try a lot of different things -- in some ways, I think my inked drawings are becoming more like paintings, as well as using things other than ink. Since I work in B&W, I want to find ways to still have parts of the image stand out over others so they don't turn into a muddy blur. It can be difficult for me to work on backgrounds especially, but the streaky effect ended up working in my favor for damaged Erebor.

Drawn on 8.5x11 drawing paper as a blue pencil sketch, then regular pencil to darken lines. Enlarged and transferred to 11x14 Bristol using a lightbox and blue pencil.  Inked using Black Magic ink, Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes (#1, #2, and #3), as well as Micron pens (#'s 005, 01, 03, 08) and a Faber-Castell pen (M). Finished using Black Magic ink as ink wash, as well as black pencil, and Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay white India ink. Scanned, then only slightly adjusted contrast -- for once, I didn't mind the effect of the scanner slightly washing out the spot blacks.

Original sketch (lines turned to grayscale and darkened to show on scan) here: cfgriffith.deviantart.com/art/…
The sketch, ready for transfer to Bristol by lightbox and blue pencil: cfgriffith.tumblr.com/post/126…

Special thank you to my friend DarqueJackal , whose wonderful comments over the past couple years on various drawings inspired me to take my time and do a lot more with this drawing than I might have normally done.

AMAZING WORK. I really can see your effort you've put in this pic. The little details. The background. The clothing. The wild eyes (and hair ;D). The clenched teeth and the dark shadows on his face make him look like a predator, which he kinda is in his forsaken sickness. You never know when he is gonna lash out which is why you're always tense around him. Because of that & the suspicious looks he treats his kin with & ''one wrong move and you are done for'' feeling. You captured that PERFECTLY! Again: AMAZING WORK

*hearing footsteps behind me*... I might get back to work now!Scared Cute Mini-Freddy Chat Icon

Yesssssssssssssssss! I'm glad it worked for you! I kept trying to "feel" that way -- both points of view -- while drawing it (I may or may not have had to warn my husband why I was hunched over, leaning on walls, glaring, and wandering around the apartment before I started sketching it and drawing the details, and that I was fine... nothing to worry about *giggles*). It was a blast working on it too! Thank you for the lovely reply!

Whoa, so much work!  So much ringmail and coins!  And all the little details, right down to the majestically grubby undershirt that he refused to discard. Very dynamic perspective.  Looks almost like he's knocking the pillars over in his wrath.

I probably could have added more to the treasure... but with all the detail on him, I thought he should be the focus so he didn't get lost in a big grey and black puddle. Yeah, that's what I'm going with.... *shifty eyes*

And yes, I definitely would not get in his way.   Maybe that's it though... maybe he couldn't find a cleaner undershirt? That can't be too comfortable, right? Would drive me mad, anyway...

(Thanks! :D )

Thank you!

Yeah, I would definitely keep my distance as well. At least because I know how I get when I'm obsessing over something and not in a happy mood... :O

I just loved how Thorin changed in the movie when he was struck with gold sickness. I had been thinking of poses to do to show it, and I finally settled on him needing to steady himself on stone as he slowly makes his way around the treasure. And of course I had to use the Majestic Erebor Hair-blown Wind Effect. Gosh, if only we could all have perfectly blown hair at those moments we need to strike a pose. ;) Seriously though, I very much enjoy drawing hair and fur, so I just had to draw it whipping around like that. It does add to the madness a bit too, I think! Thanks for the reply!

Thank you! He took me a bit of time (admittedly, I didn't work on him every day and sometimes went quite a while without going near him), but it worked out for the best. Gave me time to think about some things to try with it. :) He was a blast though. While I'm thrilled he's finished, I'll miss working on this one a little.
